TopTenREVIEWS - Bronze Award - Awarded for excellence in design, useability and feature set

French Complete Edition has earned our "TopTenREVIEWS Bronze Award" with its huge list of feature to help anyone learn French. The Complete Edition is a fully loaded learning package designed to help beginners learn and remember French. Transparent Language and Byki (learning center for tests, flashcards, and more) have gone hand in hand into teaching French in the simplest yet most effective way possible so anyone can learn to speak, read and write French. For those who have used Transparent software before, you needed to be good at swapping disks, but with French Complete Edition there is one installation and you’re done. This speeds up the learning process but, at the same time some of the features are lost without the multiple disks. To help counter the loss in detail Transparent Language has come out with five audio disks and a huge library of iPod/MP3 player media files for on-the-go learning as well.

Standout Features:

  • iTunes upload for on-the-go Spanish learning
  • Byki online workplace for even more Spanish practice
  • Free fill in the blank French screensaver.
  • Five on-the-go audio CDs

Features:   Excellent

French Complete Edition has plenty of features that make it stand out as a new and improved product. Start off by building your vocabulary with flashcards, interactive games and even record your voice for each new word. With their new tracking feature you will always be able to see? what you have learned; French Complete Edition will let you know when words and phrases you’ve learned have gone stale or old and will give you the option to refresh your memory on them. The only drawback is that you will only be able to track your vocabulary with this feature and not other important information like grammar and pronunciation.

One of French Complete Edition’s standout features that impressed us most is the ability to take your learning on the road. With Everywhere French audio disks and mobile device capability there truly is no limit to where you can learn French. Transparent Language also has online testing and tons of extras on their website for continued learning.

Fundamentals:   Excellent

French Complete Edition covers all the fundamentals for learning French; it shines in some areas such as on-the-go learning, flashcards and video. Other areas such as voice recognition and grammar are slightly weaker but are still covered and can help advance your learning. Transparent Language has also implemented Lexicon Translation Dictionary for instant translation at any time and a glossary for additional help.

Ease of Use:   Excellent

French Complete edition looks to be very simple and well laid out and for the most part, it is. The one thing that makes the program more complicated is the fact that you are working with two different programs. Some features can be accessed in both programs while others are available only in one. Once you spend a few minutes playing around with both programs you will become more comfortable and should have no problem getting around. If all else fails, there is also a helpful video tutorial that can show you the basics of how the program works.

Teaching Tools:   Excellent

There are several different ways of learning in the French Complete Edition. Many of the features use picture-word association and word recognition activities to improve your French. The French Complete Edition also makes good use of video to help you see and experience French conversations and accents in context. This is great for helping you understand how the language sounds.
There is also a speech recognition system that gives extensive feedback on different parts of your voice so that you know exactly what to work on. Unfortunately, the speech recognition didn't seem quite as accurate in evaluating voices as some of the other programs that we reviewed.

One feature that we really liked and that helps with understanding exactly what is being said and how to pronounce it is the “Slow Sounds” option. This takes any word and slows the speech so you can hear every syllable and pronounce them correctly.

Word Tools:   Excellent

The French Complete Edition comes with several different tools to help you find or translate words. Lexicon Translation Dictionary is the most thorough resource, but each feature has its own helpful hints to keep things moving smoothly.

Tech Support/Help:   Excellent

Transparent Language offers a large FAQ on their website, email support and a lot of in program help such as tutorials, a user manual and helpful hints throughout the program. You shouldn’t need any additional help but if you do, they also provide phone support for direct contact and help.

Summary:

For those looking to learn French, whether at home or on the go, French Complete Edition has you covered. You may not get quite as many features and tools as some of our top ranked products but French Complete Edition offers a great alternative to learning a new language and having a little fun while doing so.
