TeachMe! French is a good program for working on vocabulary and basic grammar rules. But it doesn't have the potential to give true mastery of the language because it doesn't cover all the basics. For instance, there is no conversation practice in the program. It can be quite useful for getting a basic grasp of the language, but TeachMe! can't carry you as far as many other programs can.
TeachMe! French includes a feature to assess its effectiveness; the program determines your active and passive vocabulary retention. Active vocabulary includes words that you understand and can actively use in conversation. Passive vocabulary includes words that you can understand but may not recall when conversing. Unfortunately, TeachMe! does not include lessons for a mobile device, restricting you to your computer for learning.
TeachMe! French does well building vocabulary and demonstrating the rules of French grammar. But this program will not teach you how to carry on a conversation in French. You can evaluate your pronunciation through the speech recognition system.
TeachMe! French was easy to use. Navigation was simple and straightforward.
TeachMe! French has several different categories, like French vocabulary, French grammar, French stories and French pronunciation. This French program operates in three different modes. Normal Mode is the most difficult. You must write out each French word, letter by letter. This mode works well for advanced French learners who want to polish their writing skills.
French language beginners will want to start in Auto Word Mode. With this mode, you only have to type the first letter of the word then the rest of the word is automatically filled in. Spelling and writing in another language can be difficult and frustrating for beginners, so this feature offers a helping hand.
An intresting game that helps develop your French reading comprehension is the TeachMe! French story program. With it, you read several French stories with missing words here and there, then you choose the correct words to fit the blanks. This reading practice also gives you a touch of French culture and history.
TeachMe! has basic glossary entries to help you with finding and translating difficult words.
